Who are we? The American Petroleum Institute (API) is the petroleum industry's primary trade association that represents over 400 companies involved in all aspects of the oil and natural gas industry, including exploration and production, transportation, refining, and marketing. With headquarters in Washington, D.C., and petroleum councils in 33 states, it is a forum for all parts of the oil and natural gas industry to pursue priority public policy objectives and advance the interests of the industry in a legally appropriate manner.

How are we doing? Since the API Used Motor Oil Program began in 1991, API members and their dealers have collected over 100 million gallons of used motor oil from do-it-yourselfers (people who change their own oil)  in 47 states and the District of Columbia.  In 1991, when records were first kept, API members operated 1,800 collection drop-off centers.  In 1997 that number increased to over 12,200 drop-off collection centers. In addition, there are an estimated 26,021 public and private collection centers being operated by states, municipalities, automotive and oil-change service centers. An estimated 240 to 259 million gallons of used motor oil was collected for recycling in 1997.

API and its member companies continue to work with state and local agencies in developing used motor oil collection programs. Seventeen states, including Maryland and Virginia have adopted used oil recycling legislation based on API-developed model legislation

API, in partnership with nearly 100 Washington, D.C. metro-area gasoline retailers, sponsored a Washington Metro Area Used Oil Recycling Day on October 16, 1999. Participating gasoline retailers accepted used oil from motorists at no charge. API president Red Cavaney kicked off the day’s events at a service station in Washington.
